Decision to collect tax from citizens using bore water in Islamabad

Islamabad: Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) has decided to collect tax from the citizens who use bore water. The horsepower of the boring motor will determine the tax amount. According to the details, due to water shortages in different areas of Islamabad, citizens are resorting to borewells to meet their water needs. Access to and use of public groundwater was not taxed.

However, Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad has now introduced a tax on the use of underground water through borewells. According to the notification, the revised water charges will now be applicable in different categories based on the horsepower of the boring motor used.

If a half-horse power motor is used with a one-inch pipe bore, then Rs. 4,000 per month will be collected from commercial customers under the new regulations. Domestic users using 8 to 15-horsepower motors and 3-inch pipes to extract underground water through boring will have to pay Rs 10,000 per month, while commercial users will have to pay Rs 15,000 for the same. According to the CI notification, domestic consumers using 40 to 50 horsepower motors and 6-inch pipes will have to pay Rs 50,000 monthly while commercial consumers will be charged Rs 75,000 monthly. Domestic users with a motor and 8-inch pipe will face a fee of Rs. While one and a half lakh rupees per month will be charged from commercial clients. Household users with 140 to 160 horsepower motor and 9-inch pipe will be charged Rs.2 lakh per month while commercial users will be charged Rs.3 lakh per month.
