CM Balochistan Rejects Request To Delay Quetta Local Government Elections

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected the request made by the Chief Minister of Balochistan to postpone the local government elections in Quetta, confirming that the polls will be held as per the scheduled date of December 28. The Commission issued a written decision instructing the provincial government to ensure foolproof security and administrative arrangements for the elections.

The decision states that under Article 220 of the Constitution, the provincial government is obligated to fully assist in the conduct of the local government elections. According to the ECP, the Chief Minister’s request for postponement was reviewed in detail but was found to be unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Balochistan member Shah Muhammad Jatoi recorded a dissenting note, expressing concerns that harsh weather conditions and security challenges could lead to low voter turnout. He recommended that the elections should be deferred until conditions improve.

However, based on the ECP’s majority decision, the local government elections in Quetta will now take place strictly according to the announced schedule.
