Central South University China Is Expanding Tied With Pakistan

A delegation from Central South University, China, and the University of the Punjab, Pakistan, visited the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters in Islamabad on September 25, 2024. The delegation presented their joint project, “Disaster Response System for Belt and Road (DRS4BR),” which aims to develop a satellite-based emergency response system for natural hazards along the Belt and Road Initiative. The system will leverage satellite observations and advanced technologies like GNSS, Earth Observation, and AI/ML to identify and assess disaster risks, collect emergency response data, and develop intelligent prediction systems. The Chinese delegation, led by Professor Dr. Wu Lixin, and the Pakistani delegation, headed by Professor Dr. Syed Amer Mahmood, discussed the project’s potential benefits for disaster management in Pakistan, particularly in areas like flash flooding, urban flooding, and earthquakes.

The NDMA welcomed the collaboration and expressed interest in joint projects and exchanges in technology, knowledge, and human resource training. The Authority highlighted the potential of integrating the DRS4BR system into the NEOC platform to enhance risk projections and improve disaster response capabilities. The visit underscored the importance of international cooperation and technological advancements in addressing the challenges of disaster management in a changing climate.
