Breakthrough in AJK Talks, Agreement Reached

Muzaffarabad: Negotiations between the high-level committee of the Government of Pakistan and the Joint Action Committee of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have concluded successfully, with both sides reaching an agreement. An official declaration is expected shortly. Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry also confirmed the development in a post on social media platform X, stating that “positive progress” has been made in the AJK talks.

Earlier, the first round of talks between federal ministers and the Action Committee lasted for two hours. Following the meeting, representatives of the Action Committee requested time to consult with their colleagues in Dhirkot.

Minister of State Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, a member of the government’s negotiation team, said in a post on X that the second round of talks between the government’s delegation—sent on the direction of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif—and the Joint Action Committee had begun.

According to him, the government has already accepted most of the people’s demands that are in the public interest, while the remaining few require constitutional amendments, which are still under discussion. He stressed that “violence is not a solution” and expressed hope that the Action Committee would resolve all issues through peaceful dialogue.

He added, “Long live Azad Kashmir, long live Pakistan, is our shared commitment.”

Statements by Federal Ministers
Speaking to the media after the talks, Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal said, “We want peace in AJK because the enemy country tries to exploit any instability.” Federal Minister Amir Muqam added that the discussions were held in a cordial environment and that issues should be resolved through mutual understanding.

Position of the Action Committee
Leaders of the Action Committee, after the meeting, sought time to deliberate with their colleagues. Qamar Zaman Kaira said, “We fully support the legitimate demands of our colleagues, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is personally overseeing this matter.”

Prime Minister’s Response
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep concern over the situation in AJK and appealed to citizens to remain peaceful. He stated that peaceful protest is every citizen’s constitutional and democratic right, but demonstrators must avoid disturbing public order.

The Prime Minister directed law enforcement agencies to exercise restraint and patience while ensuring respect for public sentiments.

Inquiry and Relief Orders
Expressing regret over the unpleasant incidents during the protests, the Prime Minister ordered a transparent inquiry and instructed that immediate relief be provided to the affected families.
