Bangladesh; Sacked intelligence chief arrested in flight while fleeing abroad
Major General Zia-ul-Hassan, the intelligence chief who was removed from his post in Bangladesh yesterday, was arrested and taken off the plane and transferred to Dhaka Cantonment.
An Emirates aircraft ready for take-off on the runway of Dhaka Airport was brought back from the runway to the boarding bridge and searched.
One passenger was detained from the plane and the plane was allowed to leave. Local media have claimed that the arrested person is Major General Ziaul Hasan who was the intelligence chief.
Major General Zia-ul-Hassan was dismissed from his post yesterday. He is considered to be a close associate of the resigned Prime Minister Hasina Wajid.
Major General Zia-ul-Hassan has been serving as the Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center since 2022. Before that, he was the director of this company.
Zia-ul-Hassan became the vice-captain of Rab II in 2009 when he was a major. In the same year, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and appointed director of the intelligence wing of the Rab headquarters.
So far, the arrest of Major General Ziaul Hasan has not been denied or confirmed by his family and the Bangladesh Army.
