Balochistan Faces Severe Drought Crisis

Drought conditions in Balochistan have intensified to an alarming level, creating a critical water shortage across the province. Most western and south-western regions of Balochistan have received no rainfall for an entire year, raising serious concerns for local communities.

According to a drought advisory issued by the Meteorological Department, Jiwani has remained completely dry for 314 consecutive days, Dalbandin for 275 days, Nokundi for 263 days, and Panjgur for 234 days. Similarly, Quetta has seen 103 dry days, Turbat 101 days, and Pasni 80 days without rainfall.

The report states that several districts, including Chagai, Gwadar, Kech, Kharan, Mastung, Noshki, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Panjgur, and Washuk, are severely affected by the ongoing drought.

The Meteorological Department further revealed that from May to November, rainfall decreased by 100% in Jiwani and Panjgur, 99% in Dalbandin and Nokundi, and 87% in Quetta. Turbat recorded a 64% decline, while Pasni experienced 50% less rainfall compared to normal patterns.

Urgently recommending preventive measures, the department advised the provincial government to launch awareness campaigns on controlled water usage in affected regions. It also recommended dispatching mobile health and veterinary teams to safeguard local populations and livestock from the worsening impacts of water scarcity.
