Bad News for Solar Users Payback Period Doubles
People are apprehensive about inflation and rising electricity rates in Pakistan.
A large number of people installed solar systems in their homes to get rid of heavy electricity bills, but the government’s new policy has put consumers in trouble.
The government has decided that electricity will be purchased from new solar consumers for Rs 10 per unit instead of Rs 27 per unit, due to which the payback period for the money spent on the solar system has increased from 5 years to 10 years or more.
Given this situation, people are turning to alternative energy sources, especially wind power systems.
According to Nisar Latif, head of the Renewable Energy Association of Pakistan, wind power is successful all over the world,
and it can also prove to be an effective solution in Pakistan, but its success is possible in specific areas where the wind speed and ratio are suitable.
He said that there are successful wind power plants in Jhampir area of Sindh that are supplying electricity to the grid station.
However, the amount of wind varies in each area, while solar systems only require sunlight, which is available across the country.
According to Nisar Latif, the cheapest electricity in the world is being generated from solar, as its installation is easy and possible at low cost. On the other hand, wind power systems are effective only in areas where the amount of wind is high.
In terms of cost, installing a wind power system costs twice as much as solar. If a solar system worth Rs 1 million can be installed in a house, then wind power will cost Rs 2 million to generate the same amount of electricity.
Moreover, wind power is mostly used for large-scale electricity generation, while its implementation at the household level is not very effective.
In the current circumstances, wind power systems may not be effective in every area, while solar systems are still a cheap and viable solution.
However, due to the government’s new policy, the decision to invest in solar energy now requires more consideration.
