Gas Cylinder Blast in Supreme Court Canteen Injures 12

A gas cylinder explosion in the basement canteen of the Supreme Court injured 12 people, who were immediately taken to hospitals for medical treatment. Two of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

The blast shook the Supreme Court building, causing significant damage to the canteen furniture. The Bar Association reception area’s glass panels were shattered, and Court No. 6 was also affected. At the time of the explosion, Justices Ali Baqar Najafi and Malik Shahzad were conducting hearings.

Security and emergency personnel reached the scene promptly, and the Bomb Disposal Squad began collecting evidence.

Rescue sources reported that the explosion occurred during the repair of the AC gas plant, prompting lawyers and court staff to evacuate the building immediately.

Islamabad’s IG confirmed that 3 injured were taken to PIMS and 9 to Polyclinic Hospital, including an AC technician who suffered burns over 80% of his body. The IG added that the canteen had experienced a gas leak for several days, and the blast occurred during maintenance. Experts have confirmed that the explosion was caused by gas.

Relevant authorities have launched a formal investigation into the incident.
