Afghanistan Earthquake: 600 Dead, Hundreds Injured, Villages Wiped Out

A powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Kunar province late at night, causing massive destruction. According to initial reports, at least 600 people have died and over a thousand have been injured.

According to Afghan media outlet Tolo News, the earthquake’s epicenter was 8 kilometers underground near Jalalabad, registering a magnitude of 6. Five aftershocks followed, ranging from 4.3 to 5.2 in intensity.

Afghanistan’s disaster management authorities reported that the most severe losses occurred in the districts of Nurgal, Sawaki, Watapur, Manogi, and Chapa Dara, where several villages were completely buried under debris. It is feared that hundreds of people are still trapped under the rubble.

Rescue operations are underway, and teams from the Ministries of Defense, Interior, and Health have reached the affected areas. The injured are being airlifted to Nangarhar Regional Hospital. The spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid, has instructed all officials to use their full capacity to save lives.

The tremors were also felt in Nangarhar, Laghman, Kabul, and parts of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
