The Afghan Taliban’s spokesperson, Zabiullah Mujahid, has described the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as an “internal matter” for Pakistan but has extended an offer to mediate if Islamabad so desires. In an interview with Independent Urdu, Mujahid expressed the Taliban’s commitment to fostering strong relations with Pakistan, emphasizing the deep cultural, religious, and linguistic ties shared between the two neighboring nations. He assured that the Taliban are dedicated to ensuring that Afghan territory is not used to instigate conflicts against Pakistan or any other country.
Addressing concerns over the TTP’s activities, Mujahid reiterated that Afghanistan does not allow its soil to be used for launching attacks. He urged Pakistan to communicate any concerns directly with the Taliban rather than through the media, which he believes only breeds mistrust. Mujahid confirmed the Taliban’s willingness to facilitate dialogue between Pakistan and the TTP, but clarified that they would only intervene if both parties genuinely sought a resolution.
He also commented on the recent clashes at the Torkham border, advocating for dialogue and political solutions. He underscored the economic repercussions of border closures, noting that they harm traders on both sides. Mujahid emphasized the importance of separating trade and border issues from political tensions, expressing hope that Pakistan would adopt a similar approach.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in Kabul in August 2021, terrorist attacks inside Pakistan have increased, causing growing concern in Islamabad.
