On Tuesday, the Accountability Court of Islamabad acquitted Nawaz Sharif’s sons Hasan and Hussain Nawaz in the Flagship, Al-Azizia, and Avenfield references, clearing them of all charges. The acquittal petitions of Nawaz Sharif’s sons were heard in the court, and a decision was reserved after the hearing.
Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz were booked by NAB based on the report of the JIT set up by the Supreme Court regarding the alleged purchase of apartments by the Sharif family in Avonfield, UK. Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar were also named in the Avenfield reference on charges of money laundering for not providing a money trail.
Earlier, in 2017, the Supreme Court disqualified former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from being a member of the National Assembly in the light of the report of the joint investigation team investigating the Panama Papers case. The Supreme Court also disqualified him from the post of Prime Minister. Following this decision, the Supreme Court ordered NAB to file references against Nawaz Sharif, his sons Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz, his daughter Maryam Nawaz, and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar and directed the court to pronounce the verdict in 6 months. According to the court order, NAB named the three references made against Nawaz Sharif and his sons Hassan and Hussain Nawaz in Avenfield, Al-Azizia, and Flagship Investment Reference. However, on Tuesday, the Accountability Court of Islamabad acquitted Nawaz Sharif’s sons Hasan and Hussain Nawaz in all three cases
