Kate Somvongsiri, the USAID Mission Director for Pakistan, has announced the upcoming launch of the $20 million Education Resilience Activity (ERA) project in Pakistan. This initiative aims to strengthen key sectors like education and health, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and its merged districts. The announcement reflects USAID’s enduring support for Pakistan, having provided over $1 billion in aid since 2009.
Education remains a top priority for USAID. The agency has supported the construction of 29 new schools and rehabilitated over 1,000 schools impacted by conflict or natural disasters. Beyond infrastructure, USAID has fostered public-private partnerships to ensure quality education.
In higher education, USAID has assisted eight universities, establishing an energy center at the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar and constructing faculty of education buildings at Gomal University, University of Peshawar, Hazara University, and University of Malakand. Additionally, over 1,000 merit- and need-based scholarships have been awarded to students in K-P.
