President Asif Zardari appointed Justice Yahya Afridi as the Chief Justice of Pakistan, while the Ministry of Law also issued a notification with the approval of the President.
According to the President’s House, Justice Yahya Afridi has been appointed by the President for three years from October 26.
In the notification issued by the Ministry of Law, it was said that the notification was issued with the approval of the President, the notification will be applicable from October 26, 2024.
According to the notification, Justice Yahya Afridi will take oath of office on October 26, Justice Yahya Afridi will be the Chief Justice for 3 years.
It should be noted that after the 26th constitutional amendment yesterday, Justice Yahya Afridi was nominated as the Chief Justice of Pakistan by the special parliamentary committee formed for the appointment of the new Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Due to the boycott of the members of the Sunni Ittehad Council in the committee, the decision of the opposition members was taken by the parliamentary committee for the appointment of the new Chief Justice of Pakistan.
PTI and Sunni Ittehad Council members announced a boycott of the meeting, after which other committee members tried to persuade PTI but failed. The meeting which was later called at 4 pm started at 9 pm with PTI and Sunni Ittehad Council members present.
Sources said that the names were sought from the Supreme Court Chief Justice by the Registrar, Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa sent the names of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar and Justice Yahya Afridi to the parliamentary committee.
After which the meeting of the parliamentary committee started at 4 pm, it was adjourned till 8 pm due to the boycott of the Sunni Unity Council. Meanwhile, other members of the committee decided to invite PTI and Sunni Ittehad Council members.
In this regard, committee member and Prime Minister of Law Nazir Tarar said that the beauty is in this, they should also be celebrated and brought to the committee, one committee member from each party should go to take the opposition members.
He further said that the constitution has authorized that if 8 members are sitting in the committee meeting, they can take a decision. Today in the committee meeting the required number of members were present but still we stopped the proceedings so that PTI members could also participate.
