Punjab is Working to Change the way That New Teachers are Hired

Modifications to the recruiting procedure for new professors in colleges and universities have been suggested by the Punjab Higher Education Department.

The recommendations advise using visiting lecturers and associate professors in place of the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) for teacher recruitment. The recommendations were made to the provincial government of Punjab.

Sources claim that the move to recruit visiting teachers is an attempt to lessen the financial strain on the public coffers. Because of its higher long-term expenses, the conventional approach of frequent recruitment is being reevaluated. By hiring associate professors and visiting lecturers—who are normally employed under contract and therefore less financially demanding—the new idea aims to alleviate this problem.

The suggestion draws attention to the existing personnel shortages in Punjab’s universities. The province’s government colleges have hundreds of open positions, and the introduction of visiting professors is considered a possible way to more effectively fill these shortages.

After the Punjab government gives its consent, a final decision on this suggested revamp would be made. If enacted, this modification may represent a substantial departure from the current practices for hiring and employing teachers at the colleges and universities of the province.

Education stakeholders have been discussing the move; some are in favor of the possible cost savings and flexibility provided by visiting teachers, while others are concerned about the stability and long-term commitment of this kind of arrangement.

In order to create a more effective and long-lasting hiring procedure that better serves the interests of educational institutions and instructors, the Punjab Higher Education Department is still hopeful that the plan would be accepted.

One significant step in resolving the teacher shortage issue is the Punjab government’s intention to hire 30,000 additional teachers. Through an emphasis on subject matter experts and the implementation of supportive policies like prolonged holidays and designated training days, the project seeks to enhance the quality of education and promote teacher development.
