Russia Warns: US Attack on Iran Could Spark Global Disaster
MOSCOW – Russia has once again warned the US against direct intervention in the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, saying it should refrain from direct intervention in the conflict, otherwise the consequences could be very serious and unpredictable.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned Washington that if the US takes any military action against Iran, it would be an “extremely irresponsible and dangerous step” that could affect the entire region and the world.
The statement comes at a time when speculation about possible US intervention is gaining momentum in the international media.
Russia, considered a close ally of Iran, is not yet providing direct military assistance to Iran, but President Vladimir Putin is presenting himself as a mediator.
According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, in a recent telephone conversation between President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the two leaders condemned Israel’s aggressive policies and called for a political and diplomatic solution to the issue.
President Putin said that Iran has not yet formally requested any military assistance. In his words: “The Iranian friends have not yet made any demands, if humanitarian assistance is needed, we will definitely cooperate.” When Putin was asked what Russia’s reaction would be if the Iranian Supreme Leader were assassinated, he replied very seriously that he did not even want to discuss such a situation.
On the other hand, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, responding to former US President Donald Trump’s rejection of the Russian mediation offer, said that the proposal was directly for the parties involved in the war, and Trump’s refusal did not matter.
Peskov called reports in the US media about the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons against Iran “dangerous and unfounded speculation”, but warned that if such action were taken, the “consequences would be catastrophic”.
