U.S. Rejects Indian Mango Shipments
The United States has refused to accept mango shipments from India, resulting in a financial loss of approximately $5 million for Indian exporters.
According to a report by the Economic Times, 15 consignments of mangoes were shipped from India to the U.S. via air cargo. However, upon arrival at U.S. airports — Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta — the shipments were rejected by American authorities.
The report further states that these mangoes were subjected to irradiation treatment in Mumbai on May 8 and 9. Despite this process, U.S. officials rejected the cargo, citing missing documentation from Indian authorities.
Exporters were given two options: either destroy the mangoes or return them to India. Ultimately, they decided to discard the shipments, incurring heavy losses.
This move by the U.S. has sparked concerns among Indian exporters. It’s worth noting that irradiation is a mandatory process to eliminate pests and ensure fruit safety for international trade
