Pakistan Threatens Shimla Pact Termination If Indus Treaty Dies
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said that if India terminates the Indus Waters Treaty, Pakistan also reserves the right to terminate other agreements, including the Shimla Agreement.
It was informed in a joint press conference of federal ministers that important decisions were taken in the meeting of the National Security Committee in response to India’s aggressive actions. Ishaq Dar said that India cannot unilaterally terminate the Indus Waters Treaty; if this is done, Pakistan will give a strong response.
He said that Pakistan has closed the Wagah border, the number of staff of the Indian High Commission has been reduced from 55 to 30, and Indian advisors have been declared persona non grata and ordered to leave the country.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said that despite the Pahalgam attack, India has not officially named Pakistan, and the allegations of the Indian media are baseless. He called Narendra Modi a “certified terrorist”.
Information Minister Atta Tarar said that India’s statement has no legal status, Pakistan has given an effective response to it, Indian airlines will no longer be able to use Pakistani airspace.
A member of the Indus Water Commission said that the Indus Water Treaty remained in force despite the wars, and its suspension is not possible. The consent of both countries is necessary to terminate it. For now, this is just a political statement. Pakistan will approach the relevant forums.
