PPP Pressure Works: Controversial Canal Scrapped
Karachi: Sources have revealed that the federal government has expressed its willingness to withdraw the controversial canal project.
The reason for this important development is being attributed to the strong stance of the Pakistan Peoples Party and the strong pressure from the Sindh government.
According to sources, the formal announcement of the withdrawal of the decision regarding the construction of the canal will be made this evening, while a meeting between Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is scheduled to take place in Islamabad at 4 pm today in this regard. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah will also participate in this meeting.
It may be recalled that a few days ago, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had clearly said that “no matter who built the canal project, the Sindh government will never approve it.”
He said that work on the project has been stalled since July 2024 and the approval of ECNEC has also been delayed since November. He also said that the federation should have terminated the project immediately.
On the other hand, the Prime Minister’s Advisor Rana Sanaullah had said that “when the project has not been approved, then objections to it are meaningless.”
He claimed that the Prime Minister, President Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif are all on the same page on the issue, and significant progress on the issue was expected after the Prime Minister’s return from Turkey.
Now all eyes are on the important meeting in Islamabad where a formal announcement of a possible U-turn by the federal government after Sindh’s opposition is expected.
