Russia To Build Two Nuclear Plants In Iran

The presidents of Iran and Russia signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement in the Kremlin.

Russian President Putin announced the construction of two nuclear power plants in Iran and said that despite the delay in the construction of new nuclear reactors for Iran, they are ready to start more nuclear projects.

President Putin said that the agreement will enable them to overcome the difficulties created by others and move forward.

According to the Iran-Russia agreement, the two countries will jointly deal with military threats to each other.

The Russian president said that military assistance will not be provided to any country that attacks Iran or Russia, and the agreement also includes cooperation in security services, military exercises, and officer training.

President Putin added that he kept Iran constantly informed about the situation in Ukraine.

On this occasion, Iranian President Masoud Peshkian said that he hoped that the war in Ukraine would end at the negotiating table.

He said that he would welcome negotiations and the achievement of peace between the parties.

The strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran guarantees that they will not conclude separate agreements with the West that would infringe on the interests of either party.

In particular, Russia is clearly signaling that it will not allow the reimposition of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran due to the development of Tehran’s nuclear program.

Let me remind you that the United States and European countries accuse Iran of violating the 2015 agreement by enriching uranium to 60 percent. They say this allows it to start developing nuclear warheads.

In my opinion, the signing of the agreement three days before Donald Trump takes office as US President is particularly telling.

He is clearly anti-Iranian and is even considering the possibility of attacking the Islamic Republic of Iran to “prevent it from developing nuclear weapons.”

I believe that by signing the agreement with Tehran ahead of the expected US-Russian talks on Ukraine, Moscow is further guaranteeing that it will not “sacrifice” Iranian interests.

One of the most important aspects of bilateral relations is mutually beneficial defense cooperation. For Iran, this is especially relevant given the intensification of anti-Iranian measures by Israel and the US.

Successes in the war against Tehran’s allies are forcing Tel Aviv to intensify anti-Iranian measures: the Hamas and Hezbollah groups have been greatly weakened, and the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad has collapsed.

That is why Iran wants to acquire modern Russian weapons to repel new potential attacks, including air defense systems and Su-35 fighter jets.

However, as the Israeli strikes on October 26, 2024 showed, Tehran is not ready to respond forcefully. Previously, Iran was unable to strengthen its air defenses due to sanctions, but many analysts now believe that these capabilities have become more accessible due to the agreement.

The strategic partnership document is certainly beneficial for Moscow as well. There is some evidence that Tehran will become the third largest importer of Russian weapons after India and China by 2024.
