Government Acts to Prevent Wi-Fi Data Theft
The federal government has sent a special letter to all ministries, divisions, and provincial governments given the increasing risks of theft of sensitive information through Wi-Fi and wireless networks.
In this letter, wireless routers are considered less secure devices and caution is urged in their use.
Important recommendations regarding network security
The Cabinet Division letter states that network traffic can be easily intercepted through Wi-Fi networks,
and there is also a possibility of redirecting Internet traffic to insecure servers through router updates. The letter suggests the following precautions:
Keep passwords complex and secure: Make Wi-Fi passwords difficult and unguessable to prevent unauthorized access.
Keep names and IDs secret: Avoid making network names and identifying information public.
Turn off guest networks: To protect sensitive information, the use of guest networks should be abandoned.
Sharing Risks: Avoid sharing directories and files over Wi-Fi networks.
Emphasis on security measures
The Cabinet Division has warned users to exercise special caution when using wireless networks given the increasing cybersecurity threats.
Furthermore, institutions have been directed to adopt modern security protocols and devise appropriate strategies to protect critical information.
This move is a significant step towards protecting domestic institutions and general users from cybercrime and unauthorized access to information.
