7-day ceasefire fails in Kurram 63 people killed in clashes

Fighting in the Kurram district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has killed 63 people in the past three days despite a government declaration of a ceasefire.

Clashes between tribes have continued despite the provincial government’s declaration of a seven-day ceasefire, according to Arab News.

In addition to the deaths, about 150 people have been injured in these clashes.

Kurram district, bordering Afghanistan, has a long history of violent tribal disputes, in which hundreds of people have been killed in recent years.

A major tribal conflict in the area began in 2007, which was resolved four years later through a jirga.

The latest fighting in Kurram district began earlier this month when a convoy belonging to the Shia minority was attacked in the Uchat area of Lower Kurram, killing 41 people.

According to medical officials, 63 bodies have been brought to various hospitals so far.

A medical officer at the District Headquarters Hospital in Kurram told Arab News on Wednesday, on condition of anonymity, that “47 bodies and 132 injured people have been brought to this hospital in the last three days.”

Dr. Azizur Rehman of BHU Mindori said that “16 bodies and 44 injured people have been brought to BHU during the recent clashes.”

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had announced a seven-day ceasefire in Kurram district on November 24, but it could not be implemented.

A local resident, Irfan Khan, said that “the attacks intensify at night while the situation remains better during the day. There is an atmosphere of fear and anxiety here, not knowing what will happen at any time.”

Deputy Commissioner Kurram said that an agreement has been reached to extend the ceasefire for 10 days, and both sides will vacate their fronts from tomorrow.

Deputy Commissioner Kurram Javedullah Mehsud has confirmed that the ceasefire has been extended for another 10 days.

The Deputy Commissioner said that 80 people have been killed and 180 people have been injured in clashes during the past week.

The DC Kurram district said that both sides will vacate all fronts from tomorrow, adding that the army will be deployed in Kurram along with the police.
